What is the Bangok Airport Rail Link?
The Airport Rail Link is a commuter train system connecting Suvarnabhumi Airport to Phaya Thai Station in central Bangkok. It’s an excellent option for budget travelers or those in a hurry, as it takes just 30 minutes to reach downtown!
Pros of the Airport Rail Link:
- Fast: Avoid traffic with a 25-30 minute ride.
- Affordable: Fares start at 15-45 THB (about $0.50-$1.50 USD).
- Convenient: Connects to both the MRT (Metro) and BTS Skytrain for further travel.

Step 1: Finding the Airport Rail Link
After clearing immigration and customs, you’ll arrive at the second floor of Suvarnabhumi Airport. Follow these steps:
- Look for signs that say “Airport Rail Link”.
- Take the escalators down to the basement level.
- Follow the directional signs all the way to the ticket machines.

Step 2: Buying Your Ticket
Here’s where things get crucial: the ticket machines only accept cash. If you don’t have cash yet, exchange your money in the basement area of the airport or withdraw from an ATM. It’s not possible to use other public transport cards such as the Rabbit card for the Airport Rail Link.
Pick your destination:
-
- Makkasan Station (Stop A6): Connects to the MRT Metro Line at Petchaburi. Ideal if you’re staying near Asoke or Sukhumvit.
- Phaya Thai Station (Stop A8): Connects to the BTS Skytrain. Perfect for accessing the Siam area or central Bangkok.
Bonus Tip: If your hotel isn’t close to a train station, you can grab a taxi or book a Grab ride from either Makkasan, Phaya Thai or any other station.

Step 3: Boarding the Train
Once you’ve purchased your ticket, you’ll receive a small colored token, hold onto it!
- Check-in with the token at the entry gates.
- Make your way down to the station and wait on the left side.
- Wait for the attendant to clear the train for boarding.
- Zoom past busy Bangkok traffic on the elevated tracks.

Step 4: Choosing Your Stop
Option 1: Makkasan Station (Stop A6)
- Connect to: MRT Petchaburi Station.
- Ideal for destinations near Asoke, Sukhumvit, or the MRT line.
Pro Tip: Use a contactless credit card to buy your MRT ticket—no need to stand in line for tickets!
Option 2: Phaya Thai Station (Stop A8)
- Connect to: BTS Skytrain.
- Great for destinations near Siam, Silom, or the BTS line.
When you know where to go:
- Exit the train at your final destination .
- Check-out, by inserting your token in the machine.
Note: You’ll need to buy a separate BTS ticket to continue your journey. Alternatively, purchase a Rabbit Card (a prepaid travel card) for easier rides throughout Bangkok.
Pro Tip: you can buy a Rabbit Card online and pick it up at the airport upon arrival.

Step 5: What’s Next?
After arrival it’s time to get to your hotel. If you booked accommodation in down-town Bangkok you have two options to continue your journey:
- Taxi or Grab: If your hotel is not near public transport, hop in a taxi.
- BTS Skytrain or MRT Metro: Continue your journey quickly and affordably with Bangkok’s public transport system.
Hotel near Bangkok Airport Rail Link
For ultimate convenience you can also choose to stay in a hotel close to the airport rail link. Again we would recommend staying near the Phaya Thai station or station Makkasan, since you’ll be able to hop on to Bangkok’s other public transport lines for optimal exploring.
We recommend the following hotels:
- FX Hotel Metrolink – $ – Budget option right next to Makkasan station. Basic amenities, great if you look for one night accommodation.
- Hotel Tranz – $$ – Very convenient as it’s right next to station Phaya Thai. Good looking hotel with breakfast buffet available and comfortable rooms.
- Eastin Grand Hotel Phaya Thai – $$$ – Luxury hotel option across the street from Phaya Thai station. Beautiful rooftop pool and comfortable well-equipped rooms.

Final Thoughts
The Airport Rail Link is one of the most efficient ways to get from Suvarnabhumi Airport to downtown Bangkok. Whether you’re connecting to the MRT, the BTS, or simply catching a taxi, it’s an easy and stress-free option for everyone arriving in Bangkok.
